About Bee N Spired & the Inspire Programme

The Inspire Programme is Bee N Spired’s flagship free enrichment initiative for young people aged 14 – 25 in London who are care-experienced, estranged from their families, or known to youth justice services. The programme delivers hands-on, industry-connected workshops across creative arts, STEAM, enterprise, performing arts, digital skills, and life skills, culminating in nationally recognised City & Guilds qualifications. It is designed specifically for young people who may have experienced disrupted education or who are disengaged from mainstream provision, offering a structured but flexible pathway to skills, confidence, and employment readiness.

Youth enrichment activities are structured, purposeful experiences designed to develop young people’s skills, confidence, creativity, and overall wellbeing beyond what a standard school curriculum can offer. They span a wide range of disciplines – including creative arts, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Maths), enterprise, sport, performing arts, digital skills, and life skills. Unlike a conventional lesson, enrichment activities are built around real-world outcomes: our Bees make something, design something, perform something, or solve something. At Bee N Spired, enrichment activities are most impactful for young people aged 14 – 25, particularly those who face disadvantage, are disengaged from mainstream education, or have experienced care.

Extra-curricular activities are typically school-organised additions to the timetable, think of things such as; sports teams, drama clubs, debating societies. These are most accessible to young people who are already actively engaged in school life. Youth enrichment activities are a broader and more intentional category. They are often delivered by specialist external organisations, designed specifically with young people who may be disengaged or disadvantaged in mind, and increasingly linked to accredited qualifications and tangible employment pathways. Put simply, extra-curricular activities extend learning; quality enrichment is designed to transform it.

For young people aged 14 – 25, the most effective enrichment activities are hands-on, connected to real industries, and produce something the participant can be proud of. At Bee N Spired, top-performing formats include STEAM workshops (covering cosmetic science, engineering, and product design), creative arts sessions (visual art, tattoo design, music production), enterprise projects, performing arts and dance, and practical life skills programmes. The defining characteristic is relevance: young people engage more deeply when an activity feels connected to real life rather than an extension of the classroom. A session where someone builds something, designs something, or performs something will always outperform a passive, lecture-style workshop.

Eligibility & Access

Yes. Bee N Spired CIC, based in the City of London, offers completely free enrichment programmes for eligible young people aged 14 – 25 across London. Places on the Inspire Programme are fully funded through Bee N Spired’s social enterprise model, in which commercial workshop bookings from schools and businesses directly subsidise free provision for care-experienced young people. Our Bees also have the opportunity to achieve accredited City & Guilds qualifications at no cost.

No. While Bee N Spired is based in the City of London, the Inspire Programme is open to eligible young people from across Greater London. If you are unsure whether a young person in your area can access the programme, contact the team directly at queenbee@beenspired.org or call 020 3875 6226 to discuss their circumstances.

Young people who have experienced school exclusion, periods of disengagement, or interrupted education are exactly who the Inspire Programme is designed for. Bee N Spired’s approach is deliberately different from the classroom; sessions are practical, creative, and industry-connected, meaning young people who have struggled in traditional educational environments often find a very different experience here. The programme meets young people where they are, without preconditions about their prior attainment or attendance record.

Yes. Bee N Spired is committed to ensuring its programmes are as inclusive and accessible as possible. If a young person you are referring has additional learning needs, a disability, or specific requirements, please include this information at the point of referral so the team can make appropriate arrangements. Early communication helps ensure the best possible experience for every Bee.

Schools, Colleges & Alternative Provision

Yes. Bee N Spired’s workshops are designed to be adaptable and have been delivered successfully in PRU and alternative provision contexts. The hands-on, creative, and real-world nature of the sessions makes them particularly well-suited to young people in these settings, who often respond strongly to activities that feel meaningfully different from a traditional classroom experience. If you lead or work within an alternative provision setting and would like to explore commissioning options, get in touch with the team to discuss a tailored approach.

A typical school partnership involves an annual programme of six workshops, delivered in school by Bee N Spired’s specialist facilitators. Each session is designed to be self-contained but can build towards a cohesive series across the year. Workshops span subjects including creative arts, cosmetic science, product design, music production, and enterprise. Schools can choose themes most relevant to their students’ interests and curriculum priorities. One-off sessions are also available for schools wanting to pilot the programme before committing to a longer partnership.

Bee N Spired tracks and reports on participant outcomes, including engagement levels, confidence development, and qualification achievements where applicable. For schools looking to demonstrate the impact of their enrichment provision, (for Ofsted inspections, governors, or wider stakeholder reporting), the team can provide impact data and case study evidence to support this. If you have specific reporting requirements, raise these at the point of commissioning so the team can ensure the right data is captured throughout.

Making a Referral

Referrals can come from a wide range of individuals and organisations, including social workers, personal advisers, virtual school heads, leaving care teams, youth offending teams, school pastoral staff, PRU or alternative provision staff, local authority workers, and family members or guardians. A young person can also express an interest in the programme directly, though a supporting professional referral is often helpful in confirming eligibility.

When submitting a referral, it is helpful to include the young person’s basic contact details, age, a brief summary of their circumstances (for example, whether they are care-experienced or known to youth justice services), any additional needs or access requirements, and the details of the referring professional or organisation. The more context you can provide, the better the team can tailor the placement to suit the young person’s needs and interests.

The Bee N Spired team aims to respond to all referrals promptly. For specific information on current programme availability and timescales, contact the team directly at queenbee@beenspired.org or call 020 3875 6226. It is always worth getting in touch even if you are unsure whether a young person is eligible. The team is happy to talk through individual circumstances before a formal referral is made.

Benefits & Outcomes

Care-experienced young people face a disproportionate set of challenges. Research consistently shows they are significantly more likely than their peers to be not in education, employment, or training (NEET), to experience homelessness after leaving care, and to have lower educational attainment due to disrupted schooling. Quality enrichment provision addresses these issues head-on: by offering a non-judgemental, creative, and structured environment, it rebuilds confidence in learning, develops practical and transferable skills, and creates a sense of achievement – often for the first time in a formal setting. When enrichment is also linked to recognised qualifications, as it is at Bee N Spired, the impact on future life chances is amplified significantly.

They can, and the best programmes ensure they do. Bee N Spired’s Inspire Programme leads to City & Guilds qualifications ranging from Entry Level through to Level 3. A Level 3 award is equivalent to the first year of an A-Level – a meaningful credential that can support a young person’s applications for employment, further education, or apprenticeships. This combination of enrichment activity and formal accreditation is relatively rare in the sector and particularly powerful for young people who have missed out on qualifications due to disrupted education, care experience, or periods of disengagement.

Bee N Spired’s Inspire Programme offers City & Guilds qualifications from Entry Level through to Level 3, across a range of subjects connected to the programme’s workshop themes. Entry Level qualifications provide an accessible starting point for young people with limited prior attainment; Level 2 qualifications are broadly equivalent to a GCSE pass; and Level 3 qualifications are equivalent to the first year of an A-Level. The qualification pathway is designed to be flexible, allowing young people to progress at a pace that works for them. For detailed information about current qualification pathways, contact the Bee N Spired team directly.

Funding, Commissioning & Social Impact

Bee N Spired tracks a range of qualitative and quantitative outcomes across its programmes, including participation rates, qualification achievements, confidence and wellbeing indicators, and progression into education, employment, or training following the programme. Funders and commissioners looking to invest in youth enrichment provision in London can request an impact report or impact data from the team. For commissioning enquiries, contact queenbee@beenspired.org or call 020 3875 6226.

Yes. Local authorities, virtual school heads, leaving care teams, and other commissioning bodies can fund dedicated Inspire Programme places as part of their support offer for care-experienced young people. This can be particularly valuable for Personal Education Plans (PEPs), Pathway Plans, or as part of a broader package of support for young people transitioning out of care. Get in touch with the Bee N Spired team to discuss commissioning arrangements and the options available.

Bee N Spired is a Community Interest Company (CIC) – a legal structure designed specifically for organisations that trade for a social purpose. Unlike a charity, a CIC generates revenue through commercial activity (such as school and business workshop bookings), reinvesting that income to deliver its social mission: providing free, accredited enrichment to care-experienced and disadvantaged young people in London. This model means Bee N Spired is financially sustainable, commercially active, and mission-driven simultaneously.

Safeguarding & Programme Delivery

Bee N Spired’s workshops and programme sessions are delivered by experienced specialist facilitators with expertise in their respective disciplines – whether that’s cosmetic science, visual art, music production, enterprise, or performing arts. Facilitators are selected not only for their subject knowledge but for their ability to build positive, motivating relationships with young people who may have had difficult experiences in formal settings. This combination of industry expertise and youth-facing skill is what makes Bee N Spired’s delivery distinctive and consistently effective.
